Joe Baker - KNBC Radio Tower

KNBC Chief Engineer Joe Baker made the climb to the top of the new 550-foot KNBC (680 kc.) tower in Belmont, Calif., on its completion in 1949. The man at right is an unidentified member of the tower construction crew. The framework that forms the "top hat" of the tower is clearly visible.

It's difficult to tell from this photo how white Baker's knuckles are as he holds on to the tower beacon lamp housing. (The person with the most courage is the one who took the photo!)
